  • PORTA - Restaurant & Lounge - Ohrid

PORTA - Restaurant & Lounge - Two visits The best location in Ohrid, Macedonia, is on the lakeside, where you can have breakfast and evening cocktails with a view. In the heart of the old town, you can sit by the lake enjoying the sunshine and a delicious breakfast. Full of traditional Macedonian choices, along with your favourites. We were super impressed we were able to order fried eggs and bacon with toast, you would be surprised how often the toast is served as fresh bread, Dolna Porta was on the mark. You feel relaxed by the lakeside and could easily spend a few hours enjoying the local vibe, crystal clear waters and views over Lake Ohrid. They have an extensive menu packed with great-value cocktails for afternoon drinks. The service was incredibly warm and friendly, too. I definitely recommend it as one of the best places in Ohrid for breakfast with a view. It also accepts credit cards and has free Wi-Fi.

  • Kaneo Restaurant - Ohrid

Kaneo Restaurant - Two visits The location, views, and food are exquisite, and you can dine on the crystal clear waters on the lakeside in Ohrid, an old town in Macedonia. Kaneo Restaurant was a hidden gem, with magical views of St. John the Theologian church and overlooking the lake. We started with a bubbly glass followed by one of our favourite local wines, Bela Voda. The food, service, and wine were exceptional. It was nice to find a fine dining restaurant with clean food; it was delicious. The steaks were perfectly cooked and of high-quality grade, and the desserts were also a treat. Cosy indoor and outdoor dining—the choice is yours. It's a short walk from the centre of the old town, strolling through the beautiful cobblestone streets. Perfect restaurant to spend a lazy lunch and soak up the views, you won't be disappointed.

  • Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon - Ohrid

Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon - One visit This beautiful Byzantine (Eastern Orthodox) church has the most peaceful outlook over Lake Ohrid. It is perched on the hill at Plaošnik, an archaeological site and holy place in Ohrid with magical views. Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so UNESCO also protects the church. The church is a replica of the old church of St. Panteleimon, built by St. Clement of Ohrid in 863 and demolished by the Ottomans. Construction of the present church was completed in 2002. Archaeologists have come to believe that the church is where the first Glagolitic alphabet students (used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic) were taught in the First Bulgarian Empire. Only a short 10-minute walk from the old city, up a small hill, easily accessible for everyone to visit. There is a small fee to enter, 100 Denar (€1.60) each. Local guides are available for donation to help visitors learn about Ohrid and the attraction's history. A mosque is also on the site, and a university is being built. It is very calming and well-maintained and a perfect place to sit, relax, and enjoy the view. You can also enter the church, and there is a small gift shop inside to purchase souvenirs. Best add the Old Ancient Theatre and Samuel's Fortress to your walking tour, as they are all 10 minutes from each other, have the most beautiful views of Ohrid and are full of rich history. Fun fact: Ohrid is known for once having 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans".

  • Samuel's Fortress - Ohrid

Samuel's Fortress - One visit Best view from Samuel's Fortress in Ohrid dates from antique historian Livy from 209 BC. Ohrid is the largest city on Lake Ohrid and the eighth-largest city in Macedonia. The 360-degree views of the village, lake, and mountains are beautiful, and they are only 10 minutes from the old town; the fortress rises 100 meters above the lake's level. The fortress is quite dilapidated. Therefore, climbing all the small stairs, some of which are withering away, can be unsafe. There is a small entrance fee, 60 Denar each (€1) and 1-hour maximum to explore. The beautiful fortress can be seen from most city areas as you roam around, always providing a fantastic view, especially with the high Macedonian flag. Be sure to include the Old Ancient Theatre and Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon in your walking tour. They are all 10 minutes from each other, have wonderful views of Ohrid, and are full of rich history.

  • Ancient Theatre - Ohrid

Ancient Theatre of Ohrid - One visit The ancient Theatre of Ohrid, built in 200 BC, is in Macedonia. It is the only Hellenistic-type theatre in Macedonia. A beautiful 2000-year-old amphitheatre in the heart of old city Ohrid, located just below Samuel's Fortress, is free to enter. The theatre was constructed between hills to protect it from winds and provide incredible acoustics. It is chosen as one of the main stages of the Ohrid Summer Festival. The theatre is very well maintained and perched on a hill with breathtaking views of Ohrid, the lake, and the mountains. World-famous stars have performed here. One of the most famous is Jose Carreras (a Spanish operatic tenor who is particularly known for his performances in the operas of Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini), who performed here in 2005 in front of 3,500 people, the maximum capacity. Be sure to include Samuel's Fortress and Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon in your walking tour. They are all 10 minutes from each other, have wonderful views of Ohrid, and are full of rich history.

  • Bay of Bones Museum - Ohrid

Bay of Bones Museum - One visit We visited the Bay of Bones Museum during our incredible boat cruise with B & F Cruise—Ohrid Lake Boat Tours along the picturesque coast of Lake Ohrid. At first, we thought this would be interesting—a museum full of bones. Bones were on display at this reconstructed village of stilt houses, which displayed Bronze—and Iron Age items recovered from Lake Ohrid. The story goes that they used bones from animal remains for tools during this time, and these artefacts were displayed in the houses. Lake Ohrid was home to a settlement of pile dwellers who lived literally on top of the water on a platform supported by up to 10,000 wooden piles anchored to the lake bed. The remains of the settlement were discovered at this spot and were gradually excavated by an underwater team between 1997 and 2005; the museum is an elaborate reconstruction of the settlement as archaeologists think it would have looked between 1200 and 600 BC. There was a small entry fee of €1; for divers, it's possible to visit the underwater excavations in person with Diving Center Amfora. The museum is situated on the coast, and to arrive by boat was quite remarkable. We jumped off and visited the museum, but we also took in the most magical views and were impressed again by the waters and breathtaking views surrounding the museum.

  • Villa Varosh - Ohrid

Villa Varosh - One month Welcome to Ohrid, Macedonia, a beautiful UNESCO town on Lake Ohrid, the largest lake in Europe. I am very impressed with our accommodation choices yet again! Very lucky we decided to stay for ten days (we extended it to one month); we are enjoying the peaceful nature of the village and being on the water again; the lake views are magnificent, surrounded by snowcapped mountains. Villa Varosh is a luxury guest house like no other. It is in the heart of the old town, which is absolutely stunning. With the most breathtaking views and absolute luxury, everything is on your doorstep, along with all the local must-see attractions. It feels like home, and it must be the first stay during our travels where we haven't left the apartment better equipped. They are set up with everything you could possibly need. Branislav and Slavica are the most friendly hosts. Nothing is too much, and they are extremely responsive and always check in to make sure you have everything you need. During our month-long stay, we enjoyed three different rooms (a total of six): the 'penthouse apartment', 'the double room with Lakeview', and 'the deluxe apartment'. They are all spotlessly clean and have high-quality furnishings. The lakeview rooms are the most magical, with beautiful balconies to enjoy the views. The penthouse apartment is our favourite, and if we could stay longer, we most definitely would. As you can imagine, it is very popular with travellers visiting. The views from every window, with all-day sun beaming in, are breathtaking. The apartment is very spacious, with a large private balcony, also perfect for home-cooked meals. In addition to the outstanding accommodation, you are spoilt with a shared kitchen and dining room with access to free coffee (cappuccinos, lattes, etc) and cup-a-soups as you wish. There is also a collection of local wines to purchase. The beautiful cleaning lady has also been kind enough to do our laundry as required. She always returns it nearly folded and ironed. She deserves six stars for keeping the guesthouse immaculate. It's the small things after travelling through Montenegro and Albania, but Macedonia has a council and rubbish collection from homes. There is a green bin downstairs; in all our other homes, you must take your rubbish to a nearby bin, usually 1km from the property. It's refreshing to stay in a clean and immaculately maintained village; everyone is very house-proud. We were also blessed to experience snowfall one morning during Spring, which was a very nice surprise. The old city was dusted with snow.

  • St. John the Theologian Church - Ohrid

St. John the Theologian Church - One visit This grand historic Orthodox church has the best views in Ohrid, perched high on the cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid. A short, easy walk up to the church, and you are in your peaceful oasis to soak up the picturesque views; if you fancy, you can take a picnic and enjoy the surroundings as there are seating areas. It was built during the 13th century and is located just above Kaneo Beach, only 10 minutes from the heart of the old town of Ohrid. It was also known as the Church of St John of Kaneo. It is very Instagram-worthy, a great spot to capture special moments, and would be a perfect spot for a beautiful sunrise and sunset.
